Engineered stone and silica: Our commitment to safe stone fabrication

Roundhouse Factory worker, quality checking kitchen materials

Recent industry discussions surrounding crystalline silica and engineered stone have raised understandable questions for homeowners planning a new kitchen. At Roundhouse, we believe it is important to address these conversations openly and explain how we work with trusted specialist partners to ensure every project is delivered safely and responsibly.

Understanding crystalline silica

Crystalline silica is a naturally occurring mineral found in many stone materials, including engineered quartz and some natural stones. It has become the focus of increased industry attention because fine silica dust can present a health risk if it is generated during the cutting, grinding or polishing of stone without appropriate safety controls.

It is important to distinguish between the fabrication of stone and its everyday use. Once a worktop has been professionally manufactured and installed, the finished surface does not present the same risk to homeowners during normal use.

Our approach

As a bespoke kitchen design and installation company, Roundhouse does not fabricate stone worktops ourselves. Instead, we work exclusively with carefully selected specialist fabrication partners who demonstrate the highest standards of health, safety and workmanship.

These partners have long adopted robust fabrication processes that meet or exceed current industry regulations, ensuring the wellbeing of both their employees and our customers.

Safe fabrication from the outset

The majority of stone fabrication takes place within controlled factory environments before any worktop reaches your home.

Our approved fabrication partners prioritise:

  • Wet cutting and polishing methods to significantly reduce airborne silica dust.
  • Water-cooled CNC machinery for the majority of fabrication work.
  • Dedicated fabrication areas equipped with industrial dust extraction and water suppression systems.
  • HEPA filtration to capture any remaining airborne particles.
  • Factory preparation of stone to minimise the need for on-site cutting during installation.
  • Ongoing monitoring and quality assurance
  • We expect all of our fabrication partners to maintain comprehensive health and safety procedures, including:
  • Regular COSHH workplace assessments and silica exposure monitoring.
  • Independent testing of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems.
  • Routine health and safety audits.
  • Ongoing health surveillance for workshop employees.
  • Investment in modern personal protective equipment and staff training.

These measures are continually reviewed to ensure they remain aligned with the latest industry guidance and best practice.

Installation in your home

Every effort is made to ensure stone arrives on site fully prepared and ready for installation.

Where minor adjustments are occasionally required during installation, strict procedures are followed, including portable dust extraction equipment, controlled working areas, effective ventilation and thorough cleaning processes to ensure dust is safely managed.

Our commitment

Choosing the right partners is an important part of every Roundhouse project. We work exclusively with experienced stone fabrication specialists who demonstrate a long-term commitment to safe working practices, continual investment in modern equipment and transparent health and safety procedures.

As industry guidance continues to evolve, we remain committed to reviewing our supply chain and working practices to ensure every kitchen is delivered responsibly, with the wellbeing of both our customers and those who manufacture our products at the forefront of every decision.
