The long-term value of a Roundhouse kitchen: Refurbishment, aftercare and longevity

A kitchen is one of the most significant investments you can make in your home. Beyond the initial design, materials and craftsmanship, there is another question worth asking: how will it look, feel and function ten, twenty or even thirty years from now?

A truly timeless kitchen should offer more than enduring style. It should be built to withstand everyday life, with the quality to last and the flexibility to evolve as the home and the people within it change.

At Roundhouse, we believe the true value of a bespoke kitchen reveals itself over time. Built to last and designed with a lifetime of enjoyment in mind, our kitchens combine British craftsmanship, considered design and carefully selected materials. From professional kitchen repainting and replacement worktops to specialist aftercare, there are ways to refresh a much-loved space while preserving the quality and character of its original design.

Why a bespoke kitchen is an investment in longevity

When choosing a new kitchen, it is natural to focus on the things you can see: the beauty of a natural stone worktop, the warmth of wood, the precise alignment of cabinetry or the bespoke details that make the design individual. Yet much of a kitchen’s long-term value lies in what happens behind those finishes.

Quality construction, carefully selected materials and well-engineered fittings all influence how cabinetry performs through years of daily use. Drawers are opened countless times, doors become part of familiar routines and worktops provide the setting for everything from hurried breakfasts to celebrations with family and friends.

Our bespoke Design Collection is manufactured at our own factory in Malvern, Worcestershire, where traditional cabinetmaking techniques are combined with modern manufacturing. This close connection between design and production allows us to consider not only how furniture will look when installed, but how it will perform, age and be maintained over time.

A Roundhouse kitchen is built to last, with every detail considered for enduring quality, beauty and everyday functionality. From the construction of our cabinetry to the careful selection of materials and finishes, our approach is rooted in creating furniture that stands the test of time.

The result is more than a beautifully finished kitchen. It is a lasting foundation for everyday life, designed to be enjoyed for decades, with the flexibility to evolve alongside your home.

What makes a bespoke kitchen built to last?

Longevity begins long before a kitchen is installed. It is considered in the earliest stages of design, from the proportions of the room and the movement between different areas to the materials, storage solutions and construction methods selected.

A well-planned kitchen should work intuitively, accommodating the way people cook, gather and move through the space. Thoughtful storage, practical work surfaces and considered circulation all contribute to a design that remains functional as routines change.

Materials also play an important role. Natural timber, stone and metal each have their own characteristics, maintenance requirements and ways of ageing. Understanding these qualities, and selecting finishes suited to how the kitchen will be used, helps create a space that balances individual character with everyday practicality.

Equally important is the quality of what cannot immediately be seen. Well-constructed cabinetry and carefully specified mechanisms provide the foundation for a kitchen that can continue to perform through years of regular use.

For Roundhouse, bespoke design is not simply about creating something unique. It is about ensuring every decision has purpose, contributing to a kitchen that remains relevant and enjoyable long after installation.

A kitchen that evolves with your home: refurbishments and aftercare

The way we live rarely stays the same. Families grow, routines change and personal tastes develop. A kitchen that once revolved around busy family mornings may eventually become a more relaxed space for cooking and entertaining. Equally, a colour or finish that felt entirely right a decade ago may no longer reflect the rest of the home.

Many of our clients return to Roundhouse years, sometimes decades, after their original kitchen was installed, looking to refresh or update a space that remains in remarkable condition. Often, the desire for change comes not from a need to replace the kitchen, but from evolving tastes, new practical requirements or a different stage of life.

One of the advantages of investing in well-made bespoke cabinetry is the opportunity to retain the elements that continue to work while reconsidering those that could be improved. A new colour can transform the atmosphere of the room, replacement worktops can introduce a different material character, and updated appliances can respond to changing practical requirements.

For existing Roundhouse clients, our kitchen refurbishment and aftercare services offer ways to explore these possibilities while preserving the craftsmanship and individual details of the original design.

Repainting kitchen cabinets: A new look without a new kitchen

Few changes can transform the appearance of an existing kitchen as noticeably as repainting the cabinetry. A carefully chosen colour can bring a fresh perspective to the room, whether that means restoring the original finish or introducing an entirely different palette.

Our professional kitchen repainting service is carried out in situ by specialist painters using the Tikkurila paint system. The process involves protecting the surrounding area, preparing the cabinetry, filling and sanding where required, applying a suitable primer and finishing with two or more hand-applied top coats.

The result is a refined, durable and wipeable finish that can restore tired surfaces and give the kitchen a renewed sense of character.

For some clients, repainting is simply about returning their cabinetry to its original condition. For others, it is an opportunity to explore a new colour, perhaps moving from a pale neutral to a richer, more expressive shade or introducing softer tones that complement a changing interior.

The same approach can also be considered for suitable Roundhouse wardrobes, utility rooms and other painted fitted furniture.

Updating worktops, appliances and cabinetry

A kitchen refurbishment can go beyond colour. Depending on the existing design and the scope of work, our team can also advise on replacing worktops, updating appliances or changing cabinet fascias.

New worktops can make a substantial visual difference, particularly when moving between contrasting materials or finishes. Updating appliances may improve how the kitchen functions without requiring a complete redesign, while replacement fascias can alter the appearance of existing cabinetry.

Sometimes the most valuable changes are less visible. A drawer mechanism that has become difficult to operate or a cabinet door that needs realignment can often be addressed through specialist aftercare rather than replacement of the furniture itself.

The starting point is always to understand what still works, what has changed and which improvements will make the greatest difference.

A more sustainable approach to kitchen design

Sustainability in kitchen design is not only about the materials chosen at the beginning of a project. It is also about considering how long a kitchen can remain in use and whether its existing components can be maintained, repaired or updated rather than replaced.

A kitchen designed for longevity encourages a more considered approach to consumption. When cabinetry remains structurally sound and continues to meet the needs of the household, there may be little reason to replace it simply because tastes have changed.

Refurbishing existing furniture can help reduce the demand for new materials and avoid the unnecessary disposal of cabinetry and fittings that still have years of useful life ahead of them.

There may also be a financial advantage. Repainting cabinetry or replacing selected components can be a more proportionate investment than commissioning a completely new kitchen, particularly when the existing layout and furniture continue to perform well. The relative cost will always depend on the scope and complexity of the proposed work.

For Roundhouse, designing with longevity in mind begins with the quality of our British-made furniture and continues through the opportunity to care for and adapt it over time.

It is an approach that values what has already been created, rather than assuming that something new is always better.

Aftercare: Our relationship does not end at installation

Our relationship with clients does not end when their kitchen is installed. A kitchen designed for a lifetime of enjoyment will naturally experience the effects of everyday life, and even the finest materials and mechanisms benefit from care and attention over time.

Our dedicated Aftercare team provides specialist support for existing Roundhouse kitchens, wardrobes and fitted furniture, helping clients maintain the quality, functionality and appearance of their investment. Whether addressing everyday wear or exploring a more substantial refurbishment, our approach is rooted in preserving what makes each design special.

Our aftercare services include:

  • Paint repairs and specialist surface restoration: Addressing damage to painted cabinetry, timber and veneers.
  • Cabinetry adjustments: Realigning doors and drawers and adjusting moving mechanisms that may change through regular use.
  • Replacement components: Repairing or replacing suitable hinges, drawer mechanisms, bin systems and other cabinet fittings.
  • Worktop maintenance: Sanding and re-oiling timber worktops where appropriate.
  • General repairs: Silicone replacement and other repairs or adjustments to cabinetry and attached fittings.
  • Kitchen refurbishment: Exploring larger updates, including repainting, replacement fascias, new worktops and appliance upgrades.

These services allow clients to address individual areas of wear, maintain the performance of their furniture and consider improvements without automatically replacing the entire kitchen.

There is also reassurance in knowing that a team familiar with the original craftsmanship and construction remains available to advise on the ongoing care of your kitchen.

What to expect from a Roundhouse kitchen refurbishment

Every existing kitchen is different, so the first step is to establish what you would like to achieve. Some clients contact us about a small repair, while others are considering a complete change of colour or a more substantial kitchen update.

Our Aftercare team will begin by discussing the proposed work and gathering the relevant information. Where necessary, we may arrange a chargeable inspection by an appropriate specialist to assess the existing installation and establish what is required.

Once the scope has been agreed, we provide a quotation for the proposed works. Following approval and the relevant payment, any required components or materials are ordered and the work is scheduled.

For more extensive refurbishment projects, the process may involve showroom meetings, a home visit and a surveyor’s assessment. Where new furniture or more complex alterations are required, the project can also move through our technical and production teams, following a process similar to that of a new Roundhouse installation.

The possibilities will depend on the condition and construction of the existing kitchen, but our team can help determine whether a focused refresh or more substantial refurbishment is the most appropriate approach.

The lasting value of a kitchen worth keeping

A beautifully designed kitchen becomes part of a home’s history. It is where everyday routines take shape, where friends gather and where countless small moments unfold.

Preserving a space that continues to work, while allowing it to develop with the people who use it, offers a different perspective on what it means to invest in timeless design.

A Roundhouse kitchen is more than an investment in beautiful design. Built to last and designed to evolve, it is a space intended to be enjoyed for a lifetime.

From the craftsmanship of our British-made cabinetry to the ongoing support of our dedicated Aftercare team, our commitment extends far beyond installation. Whether through a simple adjustment, a fresh coat of paint or a more considered refurbishment, a Roundhouse kitchen can continue to adapt to the people who live with it.

Because true longevity is not simply about how long something lasts, but how much it continues to be valued.

Thirteen years on: Revisiting Yotam Ottolenghi’s Roundhouse kitchen

Many Roundhouse clients return decades after their original installation to refurbish kitchens that remain in excellent condition. Rather than replacing furniture that still performs beautifully, they choose to refresh it for the next chapter of their lives.

It is also why so many of our clients choose Roundhouse for their next project. Having experienced the design process, craftsmanship and enduring quality of our furniture first-hand, they return with the confidence that the same care and attention to detail will be carried through into their next home or space.

There is perhaps no greater testament to the lasting value of a Roundhouse kitchen. A particularly compelling example of this enduring relationship is our collaboration with Yotam Ottolenghi.

Thirteen years after Roundhouse first designed his kitchen, we returned to a space that had been at the heart of his home and cooking for more than a decade. Despite years of daily use, the original kitchen remained in remarkable condition, with its fundamental design and layout continuing to work beautifully.

Rather than starting again, the project offered an opportunity to make considered updates that reflected how Yotam’s life and needs had evolved, while preserving the craftsmanship and character of the original design.

As Yotam explains:

“Roundhouse designed my kitchen 13 years ago, and it still works brilliantly. The refresh was not about changing the fundamentals; I wanted to build on a design that had already stood the test of time.”

The kitchen did not need to be replaced to feel relevant again. Its original quality and thoughtful design provided the foundation for another chapter, demonstrating the value of investing in craftsmanship that continues to perform long after installation.  Discover the full story behind Yotam Ottolenghi’s Roundhouse kitchen.
