Studio case study: Luxury kitchen design for open plan living

When a professional couple (with two sons) embarked on a complete house renovation, a luxury kitchen design was top of the list. With firm ideas of how they wanted their new kitchen design to look and function, the couple turned to Rush Interiors and Roundhouse Kitchens to make their vision a reality. The family kitchen needed to be functional with plenty of kitchen storage ideas but also work for cooking and entertaining. Not only that the kitchen is part of a large open-plan space, so meticulous planning with layout, colour and style was key. This is luxury kitchen design that needed to work hard and look great. The answer? A striking contemporary kitchen from our modular Studio collection, with slick, hideaway storage, extra-wide ovens and a modern, timeless mood.

Nailing the kitchen layout

Making sure the luxury kitchen design flowed seamlessly within an open-plan space was key.

“It’s a period property with a modern extension,” explains Paul Welburn, senior design consultant at Roundhouse’s Fulham showroom. “And the kitchen is open plan to the dining room with undisturbed views to the garden.”

The main challenge then was how to streamline a compact kitchen design into the open plan architecture. And accommodate the client’s appliance and kitchen storage requests at the same time.

“We decided on a compact and functional kitchen design that doesn’t take up much space,” explains Rushim Pellay, creative director at Rush Interiors. “Located on the sub ground floor (slightly lower than the ground floor) helped gain additional height. So we made the most of this by having bespoke units made to suit.”

The simple layout works brilliantly, with space even for a casual seating perch along the luxury kitchen island.

Clever kitchen storage ideas

With open-plan living at the heart of the new Studio kitchen design, the owners were keen to create a calm and clutter free ambience. Especially as they entertain on a regular basis.

“Our clients wanted a kitchen which has everything hidden away, they didn’t want anything on display, just undisturbed work tops,” adds Pellay, “so planning where everything was housed was key to this design.”

The answer is a mix of handle-free Urbo and Metro kitchen cupboards from the Studio collection. Simple, flat-fronted doors maintain the clean-lined silhouette of the luxury kitchen design. Wide drawers on the modern kitchen island boost kitchen storage ideas.

“Luckily, we had the use of a large wall which houses a run of tall units that span beyond the kitchen and run into the ‘scullery’,” explains Pellay.

Here in the back kitchen – an increasingly popular kitchen storage idea in Roundhouse projects – the designers cleverly carved out more space for extra storage, a sink and work top appliances.

“Our clients also wanted a hot tap in a hot drinks station, which Roundhouse helped us to create at the end of the tall run.”

Working as a chef’s kitchen

Cooking is a passion for the husband who loves whipping up his favourite dishes. That meant the Studio kitchen design had to function effectively as a chef’s kitchen and cater to all his cooking styles  – all within a compact area.

“The family kitchen is well used for cooking and entertaining,” explains Welburn at Roundhouse, “and the clients had clear ideas of what appliances they required.”

An efficient use of space unlocked the kitchen’s cooking potential. Despite its compact footprint, the kitchen layout fits in impressive kitchen kit: a bank of sleek, built-in appliances set into the tall units at eye-level plus an extra-wide oven and flush-fitting hob on the modern kitchen island. It’s a chef’s kitchen design that’s ergonomic with everything at arm’s reach.

“One issue was extraction,” says Pellay. “With such generous ceiling heights we couldn’t have an overhead extractor, so we opted for a down draft instead.”

Warming up a minimalist kitchen

While sleek, handle-free doors instil a minimalist kitchen mood, it was important to create a warm, inviting space for family and friends. That’s where our Studio finishes played such a vital role.

“We had a mood board prepared for the open plan kitchen design so we knew the vibe we were after,” adds Pellay. “The clients didn’t want a flat block colour on the doors so we settled for this patina effect with metallic tones.”

A blend of earthy Grey Bronze and Textured Walnut doors is finished with composite stone work tops for an elegant yet tough surface. Antique brass handles and a bronze mirrored splashback elevate the minimalist kitchen design with luxe metallic accents.

“We wanted the kitchen design to connect with the colours of nature as the garden is in clear view with impressive, oversized sliding doors,” adds the designer. “The micro cement floor meant we could afford to have a darker tone to the kitchen with textured doors – this added some weight to a smaller kitchen.”
